Spot-a-Cop was founded in 2013 by Jason C. Kubin of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The idea began after Jason witnessed a checkpoint operation that raised concerns about how police resources were being used. Wanting to promote transparency and help citizens stay informed, he created the first Spot-a-Cop group on Facebook.
Within a week, more than 500 people had joined, sharing information about police activity, road hazards, and community safety issues. As the group grew, so did its purpose. What started as a simple alert network quickly evolved into a community-driven safety platform that helped locate missing persons, recover stolen property, report traffic hazards, and share emergency information.
Recognizing the need for structure, Jason expanded Spot-a-Cop with additional groups, including the Spot-a-Cop Open Forum and a Community Alert Page dedicated to non-police-related emergencies. As participation increased, Spot-a-Cop grew beyond Virginia, establishing chapters in Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and other regions.
Over time, Jason’s own perspective evolved. As he gained experience working with community members, first responders, and law enforcement, he shifted Spot-a-Cop toward a more balanced, pro-community and pro-police direction. The mission expanded from simply reporting police locations to fostering communication, accountability, and cooperation between citizens and the officers who serve them.
Today, Spot-a-Cop includes more than 85,000 members in its flagship group alone, with over 13,500 active members across nine states participating in local chapters. New chapters are forming in Ohio, Florida, Kansas, and Virginia Beach, continuing the organization’s steady growth.
In 2019, Jason launched Project LIFE (Living Is For Everyone), a sister initiative focused on emotional support, suicide prevention, and helping individuals through difficult times. That same year, Spot-a-Cop expanded again with SaC Radio, an online station featuring nightly shows hosted by members. SaC Radio later evolved into SaC LIVE!!!, a weekly video broadcast that further strengthened community engagement.
What began as a simple Facebook group has become a multi-state public safety movement dedicated to helping people, supporting first responders, and building stronger communities. Spot-a-Cop’s mission remains clear: to inform, to protect, and to bring people together.
